Why does Photoshop keep freezing when I use large PSD files?

I’m having an issue with Photoshop freezing whenever I work with large PSD files. The files contain multiple layers, Smart Objects, layer masks, and adjustment layers, and Photoshop sometimes becomes unresponsive while zooming, saving, moving layers, or applying edits.

I have already tried closing other applications and restarting Photoshop, but the problem still occurs. Sometimes I have to wait several minutes before Photoshop responds again.

What could be causing Photoshop to freeze when working with large PSD files? Are there specific Photoshop settings, scratch disk options, GPU settings, or workflow changes that can improve performance with large PSD files?

      Hi @analytical_Lighte6cd,

      Thanks for the report. The suggestions above are useful starting points, but since the slowdown is occurring during several different operations, I'd like to understand the configuration and the files involved before recommending further changes.

      Could you please share the following?

      • Help > System Info > Copy from Photoshop and paste it into your reply.

      • The approximate document dimensions, file size, bit depth (8/16/32-bit), and number of layers of one of the files where this happens.

      • Whether the affected document is stored on an internal drive, external drive, or network/cloud-synced location.

      • How much free space is available on the drive Photoshop is using as its primary scratch disk?

      • When Photoshop becomes unresponsive, does it eventually recover on its own every time, or do you sometimes have to force-quit it?

      • Does the same document consistently become unresponsive during a particular operation, such as Save, zooming, transforming a Smart Object, or moving layers?

      • A sample file. Upload it to Dropbox, Google Drive, or another file-sharing service and share the link via DM.


      If you can reliably reproduce one of the longer freezes, a short screen recording showing the action immediately before Photoshop stops responding and after it recovers would also be very helpful.

      With files like that, it's usually Photoshop running out of RAM and scratch-disk headroom. Set Preferences > Performance > Memory Usage to 70–80% of RAM, and point your scratch disk at a fast internal SSD with plenty of free space. Also make sure Photoshop and your GPU driver are fully updated — outdated drivers are a very common cause of freezes while zooming or saving.
