Question

Why does the smart filter layer create a separate instance of each action?

I am learning about filters, layer masks, and smart objects right now, and I just noticed that when you turn an image into a smart object, and apply any sort of asjutment to the image, the smart filter layer registers every action/adjustment as a separate instance/layer in itself. Why does this happen? Wouldn't it make more sense to simply record the latest instance of an adjustment without cerate a separate layer for each one?
I made a video to demonstrate what I mean. In the video, i apply the same invert action to the base image several times.

You could instead remove »Invert« from or hide it in the list of Smart Filters.

As Invert itself has no settings or dialog double-clicking the word in the list of Smart Filters will naturally not raise a dialog.

There are also situations in which we want to apply the same effects, filters, and transformations to different images. For example, replacing an image will reapply filters and transformations.

The purpose of creating a separate instance (not layers) of each adjustment is so you can adjust each filter and blending mode individually from the others and change the order of the filters by dragging their names up or down in the layers panel.
