Question

Why doesn't Photoshop remember panel layouts per workspace across multiple monitors?

One issue I keep running into is Photoshop forgetting or rearranging panels when switching between a laptop screen and an external monitor setup.

I spend time organizing panels exactly where I want them, only to reconnect a monitor later and find everything shifted, collapsed, or moved to a different display.

For a tool used by professionals every day, reliable workspace persistence feels like it should be rock solid.

Is anyone else experiencing this? If so, what's your workaround?

My experience is similar to yours: A number of Adobe applications (photo, design, video editing) have serious issues adapting workspace arrangements when switching between different display setups. I notice this because at least a couple times a day I switch between desk use (laptop closed while driving two larger displays) and mobile use (laptop display only). For example, in Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom Classic, etc. if you switch from a larger to a smaller display, like disconnecting a large external display, the application frame will not auto-adjust so you end up with this huge part of the frame outside the visible area of the smaller screen until you fix it by hand. These problems have existed for many years.

The workaround I use is the same one jrsforums mentioned in their reply: Save separate workspaces, one for when using only the laptop, and the other when driving multiple displays. That works pretty well, as long as you remember to change the workspace yourself.

It would be nice if the Adobe applications could auto-switch the workspace when a display configuration change is detected.

@Conrad_C i get ‘reminded’ pretty quickly the moment I switch…..and it’s hard to forget the need to change workspaces. 😀

    Hi @jrsforums @michaeljames005

Thank you for reaching out. Here's how Photoshop currently handles panel layouts:

    • Panel arrangements can be saved as part of a workspace, but they are tied to your overall workspace configuration and preferences.
    • When you switch workspaces or reset them, panel positions may change or revert to their saved state.
    • Photoshop allows you to freely dock, undock, and float panels, and then save that arrangement as a custom workspace.

If you have already saved your workspace and the panels are still moving unexpectedly, please share the following details so we can investigate further:

    • Your operating system and version
    • Your Photoshop version
    • Screenshots or a screen recording demonstrating the issue
    • The steps that consistently reproduce the behavior, if known

We look forward to your response.

Thank you for telling us that you have saved two workspaces. Can you also answer the part about what happens when you Reset them?

@jane-e Don’t understand what you mean by ‘reset’.  Once I have saved my settings, by name, I do not have to change anything….unless I want to move things around…which I then can save as same name or new name, if I want different setups (which I do have).

You didn’t say if you are saving your desired workspace with a new name, and then resetting it if it goes astray. Does that work for you?
