Will Content Credentials ever be optional?

Will Adobe ever smarten up and make Content Credentials optional - or at least fix it so that it actually WORKS?

I created a piece of digital art and PS insists on labelling it as “AI-generated.” Now, I’m all for awareness of AI slop in cultural artefacts, BUT….PS is also stating that it was created with Adobe Firefly, which it was NOT (I refuse to use Firefly for ethical reasons).

The art in question was created using a mockup that employs Smart Objects. That’s it. No fabricated unicorn-centaur hybrids riding a chariot into the night sky against the moon or any crap like that.

Is Adobe AT LEAST going to fix this kind of thing so that it’s not misrepresenting my work to the world?

    @LiquidFractal - Are you 100% sure of the clean provenance of the files placed as smart objects?

    Do you mean optional for content credentials as a whole? Or content credentials just for AI parts.

    Because it’s definitely optional overall.

    @ThioJoe

    Well, yes, the additional editing history you choose to include is optional. Press photographers, for instance, can use this to document the authenticity of their images.

    What is not optional, is tagging generative AI. That will be included automatically, in tamper-proof form so it cannot be removed.

    I don’t know the details of how AI-generated material is tagged. I have disabled all generative AI everywhere and don’t touch it.

    Maybe I’m not understanding what is being talked about, but even if I generate something directly with generative fill, then export it with content credentials disabled, it doesn’t show up as having any content credentials.

    Unless you mean if content credentials is indeed enabled, then there’s no way to specifically exclude the generative AI tagging from it.

    Even looking inside the PNG headers and stuff it doesn’t seem to have anything special hidden.

    First of all, if it was optional, the whole point would be gone.

    Secondly, a lot of tools can use generative AI unless you disable it. That is optional. It’s not just a full Generative Fill. Here’s the Remove tool, for instance:

    It is possible to purge Firefly entirely from your workflow, but you need to check the options bar for this rolldown. Once set, it’s sticky and you can forget it.

    Personally I would have preferred a master switch in Preferences to disable it completely in one go, but until then, this is how you do it.
