Hi,

i am in need of a software to process 16bit TIFF images. Does Photoshop Elements 2018 support this file format?

Thank you for your help!

Sincerely

Jannik

Jannick,

All recent versions of Elements can open 16 bits .tif or .psd files.

If those .tif files have layers, Elements will give you the choice to:

- keep 16-bits and flatten the layers

- or keep the layers and convert to 8-bits.

If the .tif files are flat (no layers) you can even open them in the ACR module and stay in 16-bits mode.

Elements does not support 16 bits for layers nor for local and detail adjustment tools.

Elements supports practically all 16-bits editing for global adjustments and in many filters.

So, if you want to take advantage of high quality tif, psd or raw files, the obvious workflow is to stay in 16-bits (normal editor or ACR editor) for all global edits. That's where 16-bits make sense by avoiding posterization risks. You switch to 8-bits (File >> mode) when you are ready for local or detail adjustments.
