An error occurred while attempting to optimise the catalog

Using 2018 version.  I tried to back up the catalog, but received an error message about the catalog.  I then tried to optimise it, but received the above error - no other messages (so no help there!).  There is no option to repair the catalog in this version.

Any ideas?
