Brush not concealing layer mask when effect toggled

I have an image selected and mask with the stroke effect toggled. I need to refine the mask using my brush tool but when I do so it just extends the stroke effect instead of concealing the area I need masked. Any solutions? My brush and layer mode is set to normal and the opacity of my brush is 100% with a standard brush.

Please give us a screenshot with the layers panel. If this is something that has worked OK in the past, try resetting the preferences file. Go to Edit>Preferences>General tab and click the Reset Preferences on next launch button.
