Question

Can I keep my settings after new installation

I had to reinstall windows 10 on my C drive. My Photoshop elements and Premier Elements are installed on the D drive. So this drive is not effected by the reinstallition of windows. I also reinstalled my user profile on the C drive from a Backup.

Now when I try to open Photoshop I get a error code 16. I used the solution by opening as Administrator but that only gets me half way. I see the openings screen in which I can select "orginizer", "photo editor"and "video editor". But selecting one of these wound't open the application. I see something running but than it stops.

What can be done? I can do a clean installation but I want to keep my settings and additions I did to photo's like tags, names, face recognision etc.

Thx in advance.

Can't you retrieve a copy of the catalog folder from the Backup that you apparently used to reinstall your user profile?

No, I sellected only the user profile map of the C drive to back up. So the programdata folder isn't backed up.

Now I try to deinstall the pogam but can't find the application to run. It is not available in the app manager of windows

Reinstalling your user profile and keeping Program Files on another disk is not nearly enough. Apps write to the registry, always on the system disk. If you didn't preserve all the relevant parts of the registry, it won't run. Also the licensing will be broken. You need to reinstall.

The Organizer's database will not be overwritten by reinstallation of the program.  However, you should always maintain  a backup of your catalog folder.

I suggest you search your computer for all files named catalog.pse20db.  The file will be found in a folder that contains all of your catalog information.  You can make a backup copy of that folder simply using File Explorer.

Have you moved your catalog from its default location? The default folder is

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\[CATALOG NAME]\

I strongly recommend uninstalling the existing installation from your computer rather than trying to overwrite the existing location.

I found the catalogs folder but it is on the C drive with the date of the recent reinstallation of Windows (some days ago). As I understand from another community member, parts of the program will alwyas be installed in the registry of the main drive even when installing the program on the D drive. In this case also the programData. I'm afraid I lost the previous ctalog data.

What version of Elements are you using?

All of your catalog's tags and face recognition etc. are kept in the Organizer's database.  Installing the program has no effect on that database or the accompanying catalog folders.  Reinstalling the program may only affect program preferences which are easy to reapply in the Edit>Preferences dialogs.

Since, you are placing the program files in a non-default location, I recommend that you uninstall and reinstall the program, using Administrator rights.

Hi Greg,

Thx for your reply. I'm using Elements 2022.

Do I understand correctly that the Organizer's database wound't be overwritten during reinstallation of Elements? And if I reinstall, can I do it on the same location (D drive), so infact overwriting the program?

How can I reapply the preferrences?
