can't access images in template layers

Question

Hello, I'm new to working with layers in Photoshop Elements 2018, and I apologize if this is a stupid question.

I downloaded a template for a book cover mockup. It has Youtube video instructions, but they don't work for me. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=r1g_WoMc9vU)

In the video the author double clicks on each layer and the layer opens and the images in that layer are shown "below" and can be replaced. (see screenshots 1 & 2)

When I double click on a layer, nothing happens. I cannot get to the images in the layer.

Is this because I only have Photoshop Elements, and not the full Photoshop like he has? Can I not use this kind of template?

Your screenshots are all from an earlier version of photoshop- you would get better answers in the photoshop ecosystem community page. Are they your screenshots?

Of course in photoshop it's no issue, templates always just work.

When you open photoshop templates in PSE you often run into problems like this for any number of reasons, depending upon the layer- and it's contents.

Lot's of free template really are not that good. I bought a set of "old school" templates- of course in PS they are easilly edited- in PSE they are wonky- often missing fonts for example.
