Can't import photos from laptop

I want to import a lot of photos (basically my whole Picture Folder) from my Windows laptop hard drive into Photo Elements 18.  When I try to do a bulk import it looks as if something is being imported but I get a message saying some could not be imported and I can't find any media at all. My trial of Photo Elements is about to run out.  I shan't be buying unless I can sort this problem.
