Hello,

I just tested my new Canon SL2 and can't import the RAW files, jpegs imported fine. After a little research it looks like the problem has something to do with updates

Does anyone have a solution?

Obviously this is a major problem if you can't import an image

Thanks,

Darrin

Thanks for all the info about alternative workflows Brian, that’s what I was afraid of.

Maybe this is a sign I should try regular PS and LR instead of PSE. I’ve never used LR before but the monthly charge seems reasonable enough.

    Hi Darrin,

The LR/PS photographers package is a good step up. You can have a free 7 day trial of LR: -

Free Lightroom | Download Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC full version

There are two versions of LR - CC & Classic -- the trial is for CC

If you want to learn more, I suggest you start here: -

    Lightroom

You can import your PSE catalog into LR so that you can access your images.

LR works in a non-destructive editing mode. You can make many of the adjustments and transformations, you might make in the PSE editor, within in LR. LR remembers all the changes but doesn't save a new image until you export them. If you make more clomplex changes, LR will create a new file and pass it to PS for editing.

    Good luck

    Brian

I feel that I should point out that Adobe gives me a free subscription to CC, for the work that I do on helping others, but that it doesn't affect my opinion.

Thanks for the info Brian, are there any tricks to importing my current photo library from PSE to Lightroom?

    Hi,

The Canon SL2 does need Camera Raw 9.12 or later.

Unfortunately, PSE 15 is not compatible with camera raw 9.12.

Your options are to either upgrade to the latest version of PSE or use the free Adobe DNG converter that converts the CR2 files to DNG files which can then be edited by PSE 15. See following for more details: -

Digital Negative (DNG), Adobe DNG Converter | Adobe Photoshop CC

    Thanks for the replies!

I currently have Camera Raw 9.10. I just updated to PSE 15 last summer so I didn't think I'd have to update so soon.

Is there any other way to update the Camera Raw plugin in my current edition of PE without upgrading to PE 18?

    Thanks again,

    Darrin

    Hi Darrin,

Unfortunately no - it seems like Adobe tweaks the interface between Elements & Camera raw at each major upgrade - I think they are all trying to get the best out of the raw data.

The DNG converter works on a folder. You would download all the CR2 files from the card reader or camera, run the DNG converter to create DNG files and then import the DNG files into elements. It is and extra step but it would solve your problem.

Another method would be to use the Canon software (DPP ?) to convert the CR2 files to TIFF files. The TIFF files can then be imported into elements and edited as raw files. Don't use the JPG format to transfer the images as you will lose quality.

    Hi Darrin,

Can you please confirm you Camera raw version in Photoshop Elements Editor?

    1. For Windows: Go to Help->About Plug-in-> Camera Raw

    2. For Mac: Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor-> About Plug-in -> Camera Raw

The canon SL2 support was added in Camera raw version 9.12. Please refer to Cameras supported by Camera Raw for further details about the minimum Camera raw versions required for different camera models.

If your Camera raw version is below the one listed in the above link you will need to update your Camera Raw plugin.
