Question

Cannot backup Organizer

I'm running APE 2020 on Windows 11. I'm having an issue with Photoshop Elements when I try to backup my catalog (Full backup) I have a very big collection of photos (about 20,000). When I try to start a backup I get the standard "Please wait while Elements Organizer prepares for backup" and then.. nothing. I've waited as long as an hour and a half and finally forced a close to PE. I have plenty of room where I choose to save the backup. Is my collection to big to be backed up?  Anty feedback will be appreciated.

@kathys7572 , I use multiple methods to backup my data. For my catalog, I zip and copy the catalog folder to other drives. I zip the folder because I have found it to be faster than a simple copy, even taking into account the time it takes to zip and unzip the folder.

For my photos and videos, I also zip the parent folder and copy to other drives.   I then use a utility to synchronize the folders on each drive.

Have you done a fresh install of Elements on Windows 11 or did you simply upgrade the OS from Windows 10?  If you only did an upgrade, you might want to try doing a complete uninstall/reinstall of the program.

Other trouble-shooting steps to take:

  • Make sure you have no missing files in your catalog.  Go to Find>All Missing Files and see if any missing files show up.  If there are any, either relink the images or delete the files from your catalog.
  • Go to File>Manage Catalogs and click on Repair AND Optimize for the catalog.  Complete the procedures even if you get a message that no errors are found.

The size of your catalog should not be a barrier to backing it up.  (I have a catalog more than ten times the size of yours.  Although I no longer use the Organizer's Backup feature, I have used it in the past when my catalog was still much larger than 20k media.)

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

I did a complete reinstall of PS when I got my new PC with Windoes 11. I do have several missing files in the catalog. I will follow your advice and euther reconnect or delete them.  I will also try repair the catalog.

Will let you know if that fixed the problem or not.

Thanks again
