I recently ourchased a new EOS R50 which shoots raw in the CR3 format, and downloaded (on 5 May) the 2023 version of Photoshop elements on my Macbook,  The CR3 files won't open and the onlline help from PE 2023 is useless - incorrect.  How can I find out the version of Camera Raw installed and how can I manually download a newer version if needed ?  Thanks in advance for the help !

Correct answer Greg_S.

Simply updating ACR using Bob's link will not install the updated version into Elements.  You have to follow the instructions in the Helpx Article found here, precisely.

Note that, at Step 8 of the instructions, the name of the plug-in file you have to copy from one directory to the other is Camera Raw.8bi.

Also note that Elements 2023 is actually Version 21 of the program. So, at Step 10, you need to copy the Camera Raw.8bi file into the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 21\File Formats

ADDED:  I've just noticed that the HelpX article has finally been clarified to make these instructions, clearer.

For Macs, follow the instructions in the linked article.

Sorry, I know nothing about Macs.  So, yes, follow the instructions exactly.

I normally shy away from making systems changes that an application does not do itself, but in this case, I copied the 15.3 plug in downloaded via the instructions above and pasted it into the /users/ folder structure I bolded above and it worked.  I would have hoped that Adobe would managed this for me when I purchased the product initially and in my opinion only, the support documentation on their web sites leaves much to be desired, however in fairness I guess, there are configurations on each persons machine (in Apple land ?) that can be different.  Regardless - thank you to those who posted solutions.  Your help is very much appreciated.  Now - onto editing my raw files !!

Sorry, I took another look at your post.  The error is telling you to import the Camera Raw plug-in.  This is a new requirement for Elements 2023.  ACR is not automatically downloaded when you install the program.  (Adobe thinks that this benefits the many users who do not require raw file editing.)

This link:

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html

says that PSE 23 is shipped with CR 14.4.  So "shipped with" must mean that the installation file is "shipped with" but not installed when PSE is installed.

It is easy to be confused with the correct path.  Are you sure you are looking in the Common Files> etc sub-directory?  Please show us a screenshot of your Plug-Ins folder:

Added:  Make sure you are not looking in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2023\Plug-Ins folder.

Greg and Bob - thank you for the responses.  I downloaded and installed the updated version of Camera raw and followed the instructions.  When I went to paste the updated camera raw.plugin file to the destination, there was no folder structure after /Plug-ins, only a CC folder.  I created a folder Elements 21/file formats in teh /Plug-ins folder and pasted the file into that folder with no luck.  I still get the error message, To open this file, install the Camera Raw plugin from the Help menu.

I certainly do appreciate your help in this.  BTW the verion of the camera raw.plugin I see is 15.3

Thank you

PSE 23 came with version 14.4 Camera RAW.  The R50 requires at least vesrion 15.2.

Download the latest Camera RAW from here:
