Question

Cannot open Olympus .orf files in PE 12

I did download DNG converter 8.3, which Adobe shows as the appropriate Camera Raw plugin for my camera model.  I can neither open an .orf file with the DNG converter itself of in Elements 12 - perhaps I don't know how to plug in the plug-in?

What is really strange is that, before my computer crash and subsequent rebooting of my system and re-installation of Elements 12, I would open and "develop" Olympus RAW (.orf) files all the time - I never knew that Olympus RAW were not simply part of what Elements 12 could process.  I had been processing these files for the last three years.  Not now!  Anyway, I'd be grateful for any thoughts about how to resume Olympus RAW processing, thanks, Tom

Thanks - I initially went to the Camera Raw installer page of Adobe and downloaded the Camera Raw 10.4 installer for Windows (I am using Windows 10, unwillingly).  Then I actually did a little reading and realized that, for my Olympus OMD E-M1 camera, I apparently needed the 8.3 version, downloaded it and opened it.  The application it materialized into was a DNG Converter.  Now, neither my "open in RAW" nor the DNG converter, alone, will recognize an Olympus.orf file.  Likewise, when I downloaded the CR 10.4 version it also resulted in a DNG converter application.  Maybe I've just gone to the wrong site?

All that I see when I look simply for updates for Elements 12 are updates for 12.1.

S, I saw your response to another user - in 2014 - and learned that the Help drop down box had an Update link - I updated by downloading the 12.1 update and now everything works again - thanks!

What model of camera do you have?   Each model needs to be supported specifically and Adobe only updates the current versions of their software for new camera support.

What version of Camera Raw do you have?  Use Help / Plug-ins / Camera Raw to see what version is installed.

And for good measure what operating system are you running on your computer because some versions of Camera Raw are limited to certain OSes?

If it used to work with PSE12 and now doesn't, the most likely thing is that when you re-installed Elements your Elements program and your Camera Raw plug-in were the original version for PSE12 and older than would support your model of camera, but a subsequent update to Camera Raw would support it, and all you need to do is Help / Updates from within PSE12 to get the latest versions of everything and then see if it works.

The update window should look something like this:
