Cannot open pdf files in Elements 13

Hello --

I am not able to open pdf files in elements 13.  I am using a MB Pro and OS X Version 10.11.16.  When selecting the page or pages in the dialogue box, a blank file (transparent layer) opens in the Elements 13 editor.  This is what I have tried prior to posting on this forum:

1 - Same file opens just fine in preview and in Adobe Acrobat

2 - The blank file opens across several pdf files I have tried

3 - The blank file opens whether one page is selected or several in the dialogue box

4 - The blank file opens in all modes (Quick, Guided and Expert)

5 - I have visited the forum for similar issues and have also tried resetting the preferences on the next launch of PSE.  Did not fix the problem.

6 - I have also tried double clicking on the preview image when the dialogue box appears when selecting a page and this does not work either.

7 - Finally, I also re-installed Elements 13 and same problem.

Has anyone else come across this problem (Elements 13 or other versions)?  Please assist.  Will appreciate it.
