Adobe Photoshop Elements Version: 20.0 (20220217.Git.dot.e5d7dda)  x64. Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit.  Trying to color a picture.  Brush mode is color, image MODE RGB color.  I can paint with any color, red, Green, blue or anything in between.  When I Selected the default color black (foreground), it actually removes the color.  Selecting the default White (background) does the exact same thing.  Image set to normal blend mode.  The update just came up this evening so  I did it.  I have completely removed the elements installation and reinstalled with the exact same results.  All other functions seem to be operating normally.  When the brush mode is set to normal, black and white work but of course you can’t see through it.  Tried multiple images.  I created a solid black layer and filled it with black, added a layer mask.  Black revels and white conceals.  Modes set to normal.  Have reloaded preferences and reinstalled elements.

What is the color you want to change to black?

Can you post an example photo?

1. Open your picture file - this will be the background layer

2. Open a blank layer above this - this will be layer 1. Set the blending mode of layer 1 to "color", and paint with a black brush @100% brush opacity

3.  If you have difficulty visualizing the information on the background layer after you have painted, you can reduce the layer opacity of layer 1 to suit

Thanks for the suggestion, but did not work.when I paint with black or
white, the "color" is removed from the picture. If I choose any other
color, red, blue, yellow, etc, the brush works as expected, painting over
the picture or on the blank layer as you suggested, I sent a picture
where I choose yellow and painted (worked perfect) then choose black and
all it did was remove the color in the area I painted.

Are you still employing a mask somewhere in your work flow? Why? What are you trying to mask?

It would help if we could see the layers palette reflecting what you describe.

Consider this: If you have a blank layer, the brush will deposit pixels on this layer. To remove them , one needs to employ the eraser tool.
