Adobe recommends that you only use one catalog.  But if you really have a good reason to split you catalog, try the following approach:

  1. Click on Help>System Info . . .  It may take several seconds to load a dialog.  The dialog will give you the exact location of the catalog folder.

2. In Windows File Explorer (or Finder on a Mac) copy the folder (which will have the same name as your catalog) and paste it to the same directory.  It will then have the same name with a suffix such as My Catalog (Copy).

3. Go to File>Manage Catalogs and you should see the My Catalog (Copy) listed.  Open it to make sure that it is the copy with all of your files and tags etc.

4.  Rename each catalog according to the reason you are separating them.  You can do this in the File>Manage Catalogs dialog or even in File Explorer or Finder.  If you use the OS, you will get an error message when you launch the Organizer saying that the catalog cannot be found. The Catalog Manager should open and you will be able to select the new catalog name there.

5.  Delete from each catalog the files that you do not want in that catalog.  Make sure you do not select the option to delete the files from your hard drive.
