Challenge with Place Tags

I have just imported my catalog from Photoshop Elements 6 Organizer

 

The structure I used to tag places was

 >Country

          >County

                   >Place

 

The convert program has retained this structure when importing it into Photoshop Elements 2024 - and has recognised it as "Places".

 

Problem 1 - Photoshop Elements 2024 doesn't seem to allow one to add to this type of structure - eg adding a new place within a county.

 

Problem 2 - Adding a new place tag using the map facility: 

- the mapping seems to want to attach new places to other places within the vicinity..... eg having tagged some photos to a village, it won't allow tagging of photos  of other nearby villages by the name of the village in question.... (nearby= 2-4 miles away).  The photos end up being tagged to first village, - ie correct street name, wrong village.  

 

There are about 100,000 photos in the catalog so its a bit of a headache!    Should I perservere?  🙂 !!   
Is there a solution or a workaround??

For a number of reasons, including those you describe, I don't use the Places system tags.  Instead, I use keyword tags.  This is much more flexible.  You can go about 4 levels deep in the hierarchy, but actually you can have unlimited levels for searching.  For example, if I have photos taken at Disneyland, I could create a Keyword Tag hierarchy of United States>California>Orange County>Anaheim.  But, if I wanted more detail, I could also tag the images with Ball Road, Disneyland, Fantasy Land and Sleeping Beauty's Castle.    I could then search for all images of California and my Disneyland Images would be included. 

 

In your case, you could apply a keyword tag to photos of each village and name the tag however you wish.  If you wanted to see all shots taken in the area of the two villages, you could use the Search feature to look for Village 1 or Village 2.  Both villages would then appear in your search results.

 

Of course, using Keyword Tags does not take advantage of geo-tagging metadata.  (For me, that is a privacy plus). 

 

Whatever keyword tags you had applied in Elements version 6 may still be present and usable in Elements 2024.  I'm not sure about that.

Thanks very much for the advice!  Its very helfpul.   I was despairing trying to get the geotagging to work accurately.

 

So there are two options for place tagging - (which can run in parallel)

 

1. Using the semi-automic geotagged system within Photoshop Elements

 

2. A  user-defined tags using the Keyword tags.

                  eg  Country > County > Town/village > etc 

 

Perfect.  

 

I will get going with option 2!   It may take some time, but it will be worth it, and you have given me the confidence that it won't be time wasted.
