Changing a watermark to a different color.

I watermark most of my photos. A black watermark works for lighter colored photos but sometimes I need to make my watermark a lighter color, like white, to go on a dark background. I used to be able to change my water mark to a lighter color, with a few simple clicks, while my WM was contained by the move tool but can't do it now. I'm using Photoshop Elements 22. Any ideas?

DO THIS FIRST:  Open up YOUR CURRENT watermark on it's layer.  LOCK THE TRANSPARENT PIXELS

Make it whatever color you want.

Just have different versions handy- light color, dark color, etc.

Below, I made the word BACON a brush. Quick and dirty just so you get the idea.
I locked the transparent pixels.
I made a brush big.
I drug it around to recolor.
Of course with all these you would change the opacity level.
