Question

Circle in Clone Stamp Tool

I just bought Elements 2023. Assuming the options bar is the thing that runs across the bottom of the screen, I hit the Tool Options button but there is no Reset tool in that bar. I also tried right-clicking on the tool but nothing happened. Any idea how I can get rid of the annoying circle that results when I click the clone tool? Thank you..

@kdw1949, I suggest you look at this article to see the basics of the Clone Stamp tool.

In response to your questions, here are a few tips for you:

  • Create a new layer and paint the cloned pixels on that layer.  This way, any mistakes you make can be easily erased.
  • The + sign that you are seeing is the source of what will be cloned.  If you have the Aligned box checked, the source will move around as you move your mouse in the target area and the + sign will move with it.  If you only want to clone from one particular source area to multiple target areas, uncheck the Aligned box and each time you click on the target, the same source pixels will be copied.
  • The Clone tool will copy the exact pixels from the source.  So, if you are trying to match colors or patterns in the target, your source pixels need to have the same colors.  You can alter this somewhat by lowering the opacity of the Clone brush. By doing this, less of the source pixels will show through.  Another way to modify the target pixels is to change the (blend) Mode.  If you do as I suggest and paint the cloned pixels on a separate layer, you can change the Mode of the layer.  If not, you can try out the different modes using the Clone Brush.

That Circle is the outline of the Clone Stamp brush so you know where to click in the the image to clone.

Maybe your talking about the smaller "preview" inside the clone stamp brush circle?

In the Tool Options you can click on Clone Overlay for some settings.

If you mean something else, then please post a screenshot.

Thanks for responding. The screenshot below shows the problem. It arises when I stamp on the photo. Suppose the color that I've stamped did match the color of the surrounding pixels. I still have the obvious circle around the pixels I've stamped onto the photo. How do I soften the cloned pixels so they blend in better with the background? Second, I've noticed that the tool sometimes puts a "+" to the right or left of the area where I want to stamp and that picks up pixels that do not appear when I use the Alt-Click command.  I'd like to avoid that. It seems like there are some interactions between the kind of brush I use and other features and I can't figure out how to get them to work together so the clone stamp blends seamlessly into areas around it. Thanks again.

Hi @kdw1949

You replied to a two-year-old thread about the Quick Selection Tool in the Photoshop forum and your question is aboout the Clone Tool in PSE.

Since your question is about Photoshop Elements, I have branched and moved your post from the Photoshop forum where you posted.
