I am trying to enhance a very poor B & W photo. When using the cloning tool I select the area I wish to reproduce, move the cursor to where I wish to deposit the cloned image, and the image inside the circle is still the one I selected, press the left mouse to deposit the cloned image, move the mouse away from the spot and the deposited image is nothing like the one I cloned. Anyone an ideas. I am working at 800% magnification

Regards  Ed

    Ed,

That may be part of the problem - very poor

    . I am working at 800% magnification

Have you tried at less magnification?

Open a blank layer at the top, and try the cloning process on this layer. On the Clone tool's option bar, uncheck "Aligned" and check "Sample all Layers". Also, make the size of the cursor relatively small.

Sometimes the Clone Stamp tool is not up to the task. In these situations, I have used a "digital patch" obtained from an adjacent area. You can use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select a good area (feathered slightly), place the selection on its own layer, and slide it over the defect with the move tool. A good use for this technique is over crack or fold, where one can use adjacent pixels to good advantage.
