Correct overexposed area in B&W negatives

I am digitising a number of glass negatives from the early 1900s.  Several of them have light leakage, like the one attached.  What's the best way to correct this and retrieve what there is on the bleached out part of the negative?

    Thank you for your tip - this is indeed I think the only way to fill a space that has been completely bleached out.  Where there is still some image on the negative, but at the wrong exposure, I have found the answer to this post  helpful - sometimes I can use both of the solutions to restore an image.
