Could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document

Question

I'm honestly in complete tears right now, I've been making a Christmas art piece for the past days, I get home from an X-mas party to work on it some more, and an error pops up saying "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid photoshop document." .....In my files it is still listed as a PSD file, I had no problems when saving it, it just happened out of random when I got home today, all the hours I put into that piece, gone. Somebody please help, this has been one of the worst Christmas's of my life.

Not sure what's going on, maybe some kind of file corruption (and someone on here may have some suggestions) but you've learnt a useful, if painful, lesson - always make regular, incremental back ups of your work, and make them externally as well as locally. You can then go back to an earlier version if this should occur. Sorry if you find this suggestion irritating and complacent - but know we've all been there and have lost work by forgetting to do this!
