Count number of colors

How can I count the number of colors in a GIF? The Color Table is using all 256 colors, but the image has only about 8 colors in it. I would like to reduce the bit depth, so that the Color Table only contains colors used in the image.

    Why do you want to reduce the bit depth?  To reduce size?  If so, you can use the File>Save for Web dialog to reduce the size of the file.

    Yes, I would like to reduce the size.

     

    Save for Web allows me to reduce the size of the color table, but if I don't know how many colors are in the GIF, I might be clipping colors.
