cropping an image while its in a document with other images.

I want to adjust an image that is in a docment with other images and want to adjust it while it is in position with the other images so I can compare.  I would like to use the crop option just as I would if it were standing alone in a document.  Is this not possible?!  

any advise?  thank you!

Duplicate the image in a new layer above the original image.

Decrease the opacity of the new layer so that you can see both layers as you adjust it.
