Different layers don't work in PSE

Hi,

I just bought Photoshop Elements and a few things don't work. Among others all buttons under the tab 'windows' don't work except 'tools'. There are also other buttons that don't work, but they are not that important. I can't click on the buttons because they are grey.

I hope that someone can help me to solve this problem.

    I'm so sorry guys! I didn't have the mode on 'expert'. My mistake.

    The whole tab 'layers' is also grey. And a few under 'edit'. There are also many other tabs and buttons that don't work, but i can't tell'em all here. But it's a lot!
