After considerable work all morning on Photoshop Elements, and before having safegarded this work, Photoshop Elements suddenly disappeared from the screen of my PC. When I reopened the programme all the work of this mornung had disappeared. Are there any possiblilties to retrieve it?

No. This happened to me a couple of years ago as a result of a temporary loss of electricity for a few seconds. I purchased an APC Backup UPS which kicks in following a drop in line voltage.
