Editing dark and light tones

Menu Edit >> Enhance >> Adjust Lighting, Shadow/highlight.

My advice: try using the ACR raw plugin. It works not only on raw files, but also on jpegs, tiff, psd...

You don't get all the advantages of the raw format, but it's much more flexible than the above menu in the Editor.
