Elements 12 and Canon 1200d camera

As I'm on a budget I've just bought a 2nd hand Canon 1200d but the RAW feature on my Elements 5 wasn't compatible; so I've now bought a copy of Elements 12 (new and boxed) to compliment it.

But ....... it also didn't recognise the RAW files; although I'd been led to believe it would.

So I've now downloaded a RAW plug-in from Adobe and it won't recognise the files either ...... and ....... while I can edit JPegs direct from the Elements App, I can't make Elements my default editor!

What am I doing wrong?

PS I can't afford a copy of the latest edition if that's your answer.

In the following faq, you find the necessary links to find the answers to the compatibility issues for raw files.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-elements/faq-will-photoshop-elements-work-with-my-camera-or-why-won-t-my-raw-files-open/td-p/4303022

The first link tells you that you need ACR plugin  8.4.

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

The second link:

https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html#main_Note_5

Tells you that PSE12 is compatible up to the ACR plugin 8.1 and can be update to 8.5... (menu Help >> update), but see the note N° 5.

Note 5: If you are using Mac OS 10.6, Windows XP, or Windows Vista, Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 and later is not compatible. You can use up to Camera Raw 8.3.

So, depending on your OS version, you may be out of luck.

Anyway, if you follow the first link, you'll find that you can download and install for free the Adobe DNGconverter which is an independent software, not a plugin. It allows you to convert a whole folder of your raw files to the universal DNG raw format that Elements 12 can read and edit. An additional batch step, but free and with the same quality.
