goto helpxadobe.com Using elements 2020 and 2021 on macOS Catalina 10.15. 

There are compatribility issues

Just add a unique file name when saving an image as used to happen with edited_1 which now needs to be done manually until Adobe and Apple sort out their compatability issues.I am just adding an A and it saves in a version set with its original.
