Elements 13 No longer connects to iphone for import

For some reason, Elements 13 Organizer will not ever connect to the device.   I have used this frequently before (last import was Aug 4, 2017), but for some reason it stopped working. It will recognize the device (both iPhone 6 and iPhone 7), but when I select the device for import, I get "Connecting to device...please wait".   This wait goes on for over an hour before I give up.   Elements installed on a Windows 10 Dell PC with lots of space.   The phones are readable, as I can use the PC Windows File Explorer to manually copy picture files from both iphones, but of course they are not then organized within the right date folders as Elements would have done.  I have tried different USB ports, but no difference.  Ideas?

I’m not sure why it is no longer working unless compatibility has been affected by a recent Windows update. Instead of copying files to a folder on your PC, are you able to copy the photos to an SD card or thumb drive. Hopefully the downloader would recognize it as removable storage e.g. when connected via a card reader/card slot.
