Elements 14 Freezes

A friend has asked for help.  He is running Elements 14 on a Mac with OS 10.11.6 El Capitan.  Every time he goes to open an image (File/Open) his computer freezes.  He has tried many corrections without success.  He reinstalled version 13 and the problem is gone.

Any ideas?
