Elements 14 won't open raw file from Nikon D810

I've been using PSE 14 to process raw files from my D7000 without a problem.  I just upgraded cameras to a Nikon D810.  I can transfer my D810 images from memory card to computer using Nikon View NX.  But I can't upload the raw files into PSE 14.  The error message display window prompts me to check updates.  Done.  Software is fully up to date.  Camera Raw Plug In is Version 9.5.0.585; Nikon compatibility chart tells me this should be fine.  Anybody got a clue?  Am I being pushed to buy a CC subscription?  I'd just hate to go there only to find the problem persists. . .Thanks!

    Using old versions of Nikon Transfer are known to corrupt nikon nefs in such a way that adobe camera raw won't open them.

    Try downloading the photos from your camera to computer without using Nikon Transfer and see if pse 14 can open those.
