Elements 2023-only has thumbnails

Until last night, I had no problems importing or displaying photos in a number of catalogs. Suddenly I could only see thumbnails. When I click on the photo, I get a screen with no photo. I was working on a new catalog, to name and delete unwanted photos. Now I find that only thumbnails display in all my catalogs. Can anyone tell me how to get the full photo so I can continue and edit the photos?

I had imported new photos from both my Canon and iPhone and was going through starting from the first and deciding if i wanted to retain each or delete it from the file as a number were duplicates or very similar. I had no problems and had about 180 retained, and many with a location/name, out of a total of over 2700. I left for a while, leaving the app open, and when I returned I could only see thumbnails.

I forgot to say that I have a 2017 iMac and Ventura 13.7.6.
