Elements 2024 Layer Panel problem

Thumbnails start disappearing as I am working on a page. If I get out of Photoshop Elements and start over the thumbnails come back and then gradually disappear again. Is there a setting in Preferences or some place in the program that will fix the problem. I have plenty of disk space on my hard drive. I have version 2020 on the same computer and works fine.

Resetting preferences may fix it. Go to Edit menu>Preferences>General and click on "Reset preferences on next launch."

Also, go to Edit>preferenes>Scratch disk. What is it set to?

I have several scratch disks checked.
I have an internal hard drive divided into the C: and 😧 drives
I have 3 external hard drives checked as scratch disks.

The C: drive is NOT checked.
The 😧 drive IS checked.

The H: I: J: external drives ARE checked.
