Error on Photoshop Element 9

I have been using Photoshop Elements 9 for years, now I get an error - Cannot open . . . . . . . .because it is the wrong type of file. What can I do

What kind of file are you trying to open? If it is a raw file from a newer camera, you will need to upgrade to a newer version of Elements or else use the Adobe DNG converter to change the format of the file.

If it is not a raw file, please give us the exact wording of the error message and the details of what you are doing to bring up the message.
