file association

I have backups from PSE12. 

I some how thought I could just open an .xmp file by clicking on it. Nope. Tried to open it in Infranwiew...nope.

But some, not all files got the red Infranview badge on the left end.

And to my surprise it changed files on all my backups, all disks.

How do I get the backups back to normal?

 

Want all files to have the :correct" associations.

 

Sorry it this is confusing, but .... so am I.

    What OS are you using?

    An XMP file is not a photo file.  It is a text file usually associated with a raw file to describe edits made to the raw file.  Since you are asking how to change file associations, I am assuming that you are not trying to open an .xmp file for the purpose of editing the text to change the appearance of a raw photo file.

     

    I seriously doubt whether the fact that your .xmp files have become associated with Irfanview will have any effect on your backups which will be governed by the Backup.tly file.

    Thanks for the reply. I tried to double-click open a file in a backup and it got associated with Infranview. W10 offered to let me associate it with the PSE editor.  Then  it did the association in every backup thruout the system,

    But, still trying to understand it.

    All my originals are jpg.  In PSE organizer they appear as jpg. But in my backups, I have a mix of .xmp and jpg--

    Is it the case that files that I edit in PSE get backed up by PSE as xmp and unedited files stay jpg??   

    That would explain it...I never noticed before but all my different cat backups do have a mix. If so, I would feel stupid...but happy to understand it. And yes the file associations would not matter.
