File Save Problem in Elements 15

I open a TIFF file.

Create a copy of the background layer to create a fallback

Use polygonal tool and clone stamp to remove objects.

When I save it back to TIFF format all the previously selected areas are blank.  But if I save it to JPEG instead everything is there.

Clearly I am doing something wrong but I can't figure out what.  I would have expected both formats to be wrong.

This is a recurring problem.  On one image, where I had done extensive editing, I ended up with an almost totally blank TIFF file but a fully populated JPEG.

Thanks for helping!

Funny you should ask that.  I was just looking at that very issue.

When the image is saved the Windows Explorer icon looks like this:

The blue patch corresponds to the area I lassoed and clone stamped although I did deselect it before saving.

I tried opening it in Elements and the file opened perfectly with the entire image and both layers present.

Thinking it might be a problem with Windows Explorer I tried viewing it in Daminion, Synology File Station and Synology Photo Station.

They all behaved exactly the same as Windows Explorer.

Can you post a screenshot of the image and layers panel just before saving as a tiff?

A major difference between jpeg and tiff is a tiff can retain layers, where as a jpeg is a flattened version of your file.

See Image and explanations below.

A Shows the layer I created and worked on

B. Shows part of the area I lassoed using Polygonal tool and clone stamped. I then deselected the area and used the Blur tool to smooth out the join.

C. Then I did File > Save As and checked the box for layers

D. Shows the further options I was presented. I changed nothing here. I pressed OK

E. Shows what has been saved to disc. Doh!

I am obviously making some sort of rookie mistake.

How does the saved tif look if you reopen it in photoshop elements?

What operating system are you using?

Did you save any selections while you were editing the photo?

Select>Save Selection

Sometimes finder/explorer only shows the alpha channels that are in a saved tiff, which is what saved selections are.
