File Size/layers

How many layers will photoshop elements 15 allow you to work with? I am currently in the middle of a project and photoshop is slowing right down and even sometimes crashing.  I am at the stage that I can no longer resize and crop another photo to add to my project. My canvas size is 150cm x 100cm, and at this stage my project reads 17717 x 11811 pixels. I have many many layers.  Is my project size the issue or something else?  I have only recently upgraded to elements 15, previously I was on elements 13 and started to have this problem so upgraded and imported my project. I am so frustrated as I have spent months on this project.

I don't know if Elements has a limit, but here is a Photoshop example with 15,000+ layers !

Here is a link to an Adobe page delineating the system requirements for PSEv.15:

System requirements | Adobe Photoshop Elements

Check to see if your equipment conforms.

If you really think that multiple layers are causally related to your issue, you can open a blank layer at the top of the stack of layers, and press CTR+SHIFT+E. This will generate a "stamp visible layer", which combines all of the layers below. You can shut off the visibility of the subjacent layers, or, delete them. I would do this on a duplicate of your project, and back it up periodically as you go along.

Photoshop Elements maximum image size limits

    - Have you 'smart layers'? They can increase the file size in kB dramatically; simplifying layers may help.

    - What's your RAM size? How are your scratch disks set? Do you work with other applications open at the same time?

Thanks for the reply. No I don't work with smart layers (not to sure what they are!) My Ram is 4GB and not sure what scratch disks are. I have no other applications open when I am working.
