finding and reloading saved selections in pse 15

I have the photo in the expert editor and make a selection and save it.  While I have it on the screen I can find it and load it. When I close the photo out of the editor do  I use a version set but when I bring it back to the editor, the same photo doesn't offer any choice of selection. Do I save changes to the photo when I close out-Tried it both ways- no difference Not saving them on layers-hopefully there is an easy answer

    Selections are not saved in the jpeg format. Use psd or tiff instead.
