General file saving question

I've been using PSE for many years. Just started using PSE 2024. My general workflow is to start in Organizer, select photos, select Editor button, modify photos, and save.

QUESTIONS

The first screen gives me an option to save in version set. I do not want to save versions most of the time. Can I change the default setting for version sets?

The second screen asks me "do I want to replace an existing file". Of course I want to replace the file, if I didn't I would have said Close, Do Not Save. Is there some setting to change this behavior?

    Clearly, you saved the edited file in a different folder.  Therefore, there would be no warning that you are overwriting the original.   I'm not sure if you are complaining about the edited file not containing your 1 star rating of the original.  Star ratings do not carry over to the edited version.  Once you edit the file, hopefully it will become a 5 star image.  😁

    The Save As dialog is sticky and should remember whatever option you last used.  So, if you uncheck the Save in Version Set box, that choice will be made automatically the next time you use it (and vice versa).  I know of no option to set it as a default setting.  And if you simply say Close (after editing) you will be presented with another choice to make sure that you don't lose the edits you have made.

    There is no "of course" about it.  Adobe wants to make sure that you are not overwriting (replacing) a file.  If you do, the original file will be unavailable for further or different editing. 

     

    Having said that, there are some options that are available for changing the behavior.  Look under Edit>Preferences>Saving Files:

      "Save" and "Save as" were not very sticky. When I saved (unchecking version), I ended up with 2 images with the same name (see attachment, one with a star, one without a star). Fortunately I can Edit Delete and get rid of one of the images.

       

      The good news for me is the suggestion check Saving Files preference

      Adobe Photoshop Elements 2024 Editor | Settings | Saving Files

      On First Save. | Save Over Current File

      This takes me right to the JPEG file dialogue

       

      Save Over Current File eleliminates version concerns and replacing concerns. I still have a backup of the photos after the initial download and on the original SD card.
