Grayed Out 8 bit grayed out under mode. in Photoshop Elements 12

Hi. I am wondering why the 8 bit option under image>mode is grayed out. I have an older version of photoshop adobe elements. If it is for newer versions, why is it even there?

BTW, the image name tab will show whether the image is in 8-bit mode:

It means that the image is already in 8-bit/channel mode. If you open a 16-bit image in the Editor, the 8-bit mode will become active in order to convert the image to 8-bit. Many editing tools in Elements can only work on 8-bit images.
