Question

have elements 12 and thought that I could update to 15 simply by having a trial in 15 and then putting in my 12 Product Serial number. Rejected - does this mean that I have to pay full price for 15?

No, you may not use an old serial number in a new version

Yes, you must buy the new version version 15 is 64bit only http://www.adobe.com/in/products/photoshop-premiere-elements.html

If you have a 32bit computer Amazon.com: Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 & Premiere Elements 14 Multi-Platform 14 [Old Version]: Software

Yes, you must buy the new version version 15

You can order the 'upgrade' version with a special price (20% less) if you own a previous registered version.

Very often you can buy the new version at still better prices from big retail stores, there are special deals at times.
