help please, files wont open [Unable to open NEF files in PSE 8]

ok so i have elements 8 and I haven't used it in a long time. So I am trying to open an NEF file from the same camera I have used in the past with this program but it will not open. It would open the file folder and let me select the file i want to open but when I hit open it just disappears as if its about to open the file but never does. Can some one please help me with this?

Hello

under the help menu >up dates it tells me there are no current updates. I tried to uninstall the program and reinstall it with no luck still have the same problem.
