How can you create drag and drop boxes without clipping masks?

In the past, I created some drag and drop templates and cannot remember how I did the boxes.  All I have to do is drop a photo into them or click on the box to add a photo.  I did NOT use clipping masks with this one.  Can someone refresh my memory on how to do this in PSE? I can only find tutorials of how to use already created drag and drop templates that other designers have.  These specific designers also used a drag and drop feature that I believe was available starting in version 15 like mine.
