How do I enable layers in Adobe Photoshop elements

Currently my layers are all grayed. Is there a way to enable them. Please let me know.

I am sorry but your issue is not very clear. Would you mind sharing more information on your work flow and share a screen shot of the layers panel or the entire interface if possible?

Also, which version of Photoshop Elements are you using? And are you using a Windows or Mac?
