Question

How seamless is it to upgrade from Photoshop 7 to a newer version?

I am still using Photoshop 7 elements. I am considering finally updating to a newer version. However, I am concerned about encountering trouble when doing this. I am not a computer whiz, but I can do anything with clear, step-by-step instructions. Instructions that tell/show me step by step what to do next. (I am an elderly woman who still likes to use the computer and create photo albums for my family.) My biggest concern is losing photos and the organization system I have established for my photos. All of my photos are in albums by year, and all photos are tagged with the names of people who are in them.  Should I be concerned? Are there steps to take to avoid these issues? Thank you for any help you can give me.

What operating system are you using (Windows 10 or Windows 11)?  Does your current computer meet the system specifications for Elements 2026?  If you need help figuring that out, we can help you.

Elements 7 is one of the few versions that I don't have on my computer.  However, I was just able to convert an Elements 6 test catalog without a problem and the keyword tags were intact.   I assume that you have used the Organizer to create your albums and organize your photos into folders.  As a word of explanation, Elements does not touch the files on your computer.  It only pinpoints where your photo files are stored.  The tags that you have created and applied to your photos will also remain.  However, I recommend that you keep Elements 7 installed on your computer until the entire process of converting your catalog is completed.

There have been some major changes in how people are recognized and tagged in photos.  Although I expect that all of your People Tags will be converted and available in Elements 2026, I am not sure exactly sure how the tags will appear in your converted catalog.  You may actually enjoy the new process which will automatically recognize the faces in your photos and ask you to name and confirm who those people are.  When I go through the process with a new catalog, I certainly enjoy seeing and remembering old photos.

You will not be able to use Elements 2026 for the length of time you have used version 7.  Adobe now sells only a 3 year license for the program (although we have been told that the Organizer will continue to work indefinitely even if you don't renew the license).

When you first launch the Organizer in Elements 2026, you should see a dialog that asks you whether you want to convert your old catalog.  It is easy to miss, so you should pay attention and answer yes to the question.

I have one final question for you.  When you say that you have organized your photos in albums by year, do you mean Elements Albums (created by the Organizer) or do you mean folders stored on your computer (or both)?  Some people use the term interchangeably.

I will be happy to help you through the process and answer your questions with step-by-step instructions as necessary.  You will find that Elements 2026 also gives you the opportunity to ask plain language questions and you will either be pointed to an answer or even an instructional tutorial.  There are also a number of other features that help you edit your photos, for example with Guided Edits which hold your hand while editing photos.

Oh my gosh, Greg! Thank you so, so much. You put me at ease, and I now feel that I might be able to do this without too many complications.  I had spoken with customer support a few years ago, and I was told they couldn't help me because they were no longer supporting version 7.  I was told to try the Adobe Forum. You are truly a godsend! I appreciate your willingness to help me out.  I do have Windows 11 and my computer was recently updated. I will send your comments and the system specs for the latest Photoshop Elements to my computer guy and will get back to you about that. He is very good with hardware, but not so good with software that he doesn't own  himself.  I did update Wordperfect Last year, but my files did not transfer, hence my concern with updating Elements after so many years. Since my computer was recently updated, I think I should be fine with the specs, but I will confirm that. As for Albums: in the organize section of Elements, I created albums with the year as the name. I have albums named 2003 through 2026. All photos are tagged with the album of the year they were taken.  Any photo with people is tagged with the names of the people in it. My organization system in My Pictures is different. I have folders for each year, but then subfolders for each month and subfolders within each month. I didn't start off this way, but I quickly found it makes the most sense to me. It may not be the most efficient, but for this senior citizen, I understand it and can easily find what I want. I make online photo albums, so the albums tagged by year, helps me out a lot.  I am looking forward to moving forward with this. I will be back in touch once I get the answer about specs from my computer guy. Thank you again!
