how to change existing background colour

I created a new document with white background, did some painting, then wished I had begun with a black background. How can I turn the existing white background black without losing what I've painted?

Legend

Just fill your new layer with a flood fill using the paintbucket tool on that new layer.

Other ways of doing this this- I tend to show quick, easy, and simple.
