How to prevent Photoshop Elements from crashing upon opening catalog

When I start PE18 Elements organizer it shows the message "Pleae wait until catalog is being loaded". PE then immediately crashes.

I have tried to repair the catalog (holding Shift-key while opening PE) but this does not work.

Any suggestions? I am kind of desperate, I have put a lot of work over the years itno this catalog.

I have tried everything, except renaming the prf files, as I cannot locate these on my computer (Windows 10).

Did you also try to open a new empty catalog from the menu when you hold Shift-key and open the Organizer?

This is to check if there is another problem than the catalog corruption.

With the new empty catalog open you can try the repair to your previous catalog. What happens in this case?

    What is your Elements version?

Thank you for your suggestion. Yes, if have tried this. This works correct, I can create a new catalog. I have also tried to repair the catalog (no errors reported). I have also changed some of the settings (Edit > Preferences > Files) and unchecked the box for thumbnails.

    But nothing helped so far...

You don't state your Elements version. That would be useful for deleting the prefs, but I asked before suggesting another troubleshooting step.

    - As far as I know, the 'repair' function only works on the main sqlite catalog file, which is in the format:

    catalog.pseXXdb.

    PSE2018: catalog.pse16db

    PSE15:     catalog.pse15db

    and so on...

Other components of the catalog folder might cause such a problem.

I have found that you can check that possibility like this.

    - locate the above catalog file. Menu Help >> System info

    - create somewhere a new folder named something like: 'myCatalogLight'

    - copy and paste the catalog file into that folder.

    - With Elements closed, double click on the catalog.pseXXdb file.

With a bit of luck, your organizer should open with most of the contents of your catalog.

You'll recover what is stored in that database, including keywords, captions, tags, notes, tag hierarchies, stacks and version sets.

Other features like face recognition or geotagging might be lost.

Missing components like thumbnails should be automatically rebuilt (may require hours)

    Could you try this?
