How to ungroup layers in PS Elements 15

I'm having touble editing a PSD file I created a year ago in PS Elements 15. The text in a book I'm editing needs updating, and there are about 4 layers of text along with 2 photo layers per page of a 52 page book. I know I didn't group them when I created them a year ago, but now they are locked. How? Why? I've gone online in the Adobe Help pages and the fixes they mention don't seem to apply. For instance, the Layer>Simpliy Layer tool is grayed out. Another instruction says I have to first lock the pixel layers in the layer panel then unlock the pixel layers, but it is also grayed out. At the moment I am having to re-type ALL the data on each page, and re-make the photo and text layers, which is tedious as all get out! I am currently on page 2. Can anyone offer some advice?

Elements+, a paid for group of scripts has an Split Smart Object function:

It looks like a Smart Object layer, which happens when one uses File>Place.

Are you sure you don't have another psd with the layers intact?

I did use File>Place on some of my pages. Is that the culprit? I discovered
that all of my pages aren't having this problem, just some of them. But,
no, I don't have another psd with the layers intact. I'll make sure to save
it differently next time.Is there a way to change it? - Thanks for your
response.
